Examination

After spending all day leaning into books
you begin to see little difference
between white and black. Both are so solid.
You get up to go to the bathroom
and as the cool water from the faucet
gets warmer by degrees,
bringing your fingers back to life,
you recognize that there is a virtue
in clarity as you grow clean.
It is not the virtue of knowing but the virtue
of nothingness, which refuses to be studied.
